King meets representatives of American Jewish organisations

17 September 2017

His Majesty King Abdullah, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, met on Sunday with representatives of American Jewish organisations and discussed efforts to move the peace process forward, in addition to the latest regional developments.

King Abdullah stressed the importance of launching serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli negotiations based on the two-state solution as the only way to end the conflict.

Negotiations should lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living in peace and security, side by side, with Israel, His Majesty noted.

The King also affirmed the United States’ key role in this regard, and President Donald Trump’s commitment to working to reach a peace agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

His Majesty highlighted the important role of Jewish organisations in the United States in supporting peace efforts.

Reaching a just and comprehensive peace will bring security and stability to the region, the King continued, warning that failure to achieve progress will fuel feelings of frustration and desperation among the region’s peoples and serve the agenda of extremists, who exploit the injustices perpetrated against the Palestinians.

Discussions also covered the recent crisis at Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, with His Majesty reaffirming that Jordan, under the Hashemite Custodianship of Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem, will continue to safeguard holy places in the city.

Jordan, the King stressed, will not allow any attempts to change the historical and legal status quo at Al Haram Al Sharif.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed regional and international efforts to fight terrorism.
